About our Flutes
Firewind Flutes

Our goal is to produce flutes that our customers will find easy to play and beautiful to listen to.  All our flutes are therefore tuned to the pentatonic scale, the same as used for Native American flutes.  That scale is composed of five notes, all of which sound good when played in any order.

Each type of flute that we make has its own distinctive sound:

-Those that the animals wore on their heads, Gemshorns, have a mellow, full quality.  Even the high notes have a mellow fullness.

-Bone whistles, whether from birds or mammals, have a clear, trill quality that carries.

-The bamboo Shakuhachi lingers warmly and is most versatile at bending notes.  Those that we make  play an entire two octaves.

-The hauntingly familiar Native American flute sound varies according to the wood from which it's crafted.  We use a wide variety of woods, primarily curly maple, rosewood, cedar, ebony, walnut and cherry.

The Cane flute, whether transverse or end-blown, produces a simple, straight forward tone.
